About This Item
Washington: Henry Polkinhorm, printer, 1879. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. 551, [ix] pp. Bound in one-half leather with marbled paper endpapers. Signed by Corcoran. The privately-printed limited edition is the prime source for the details surrounding this 19th century banker / philanthropist. As a Southern sympathizer, he left America in 1862 and did not return until the end of the Civil War. He gave considerable gifts to institutions in Virginia and Washington, D. C. that were left improverished in the wake of the Civil War. Among the "letters" section of this text are several from Robert E. Lee. An uncommon title. Front hinge tender but otherwise a near fine copy.
