Boston: Small, Maynard, 1914. 48 pp, 7 5/8" H, red paper-covered boards with black lettering/illustration on front board. "First printed in the Fortnightly Review in 1913." Sir Arthur Conan Doyle calls "to the attention of his fellow-countrymen the warning so openly given them by General von Bernhardi in his 'Germany and the Next War, (taking) occasion to analyze the German general's 'case' against England and (answering) his contentions in the light of history and reason. His summing up of German motives and German plans is particularly valuable to Americans in the light of after events, and incidentally the gentle raillery with which he punctures some of Bernhardi's statements is a delight to every one who has been entertained by 'Brigadier Gerald'. His novel plan for national defence is of particular interest to every American who has ever crossed the English Channel, while his advice to his Irish fellow-countrymen seems prophetic." From the introductory 'Note'. Doyle proposes a Channel Tunnel to reduce the loss of men/materiel in crossing the English Channel. A typed paper label has been glued to the spine, bearing the title/author's name. Previous owner's signature and date in ink on the title page and at the top of page 18 across the page text, oval library stamp on the title page (this is the only library marking in the book), light fading to the spine colour, wear at the corners of the boards and at the top/bottom of the spine, one small corner bump, wear on the hinges including some splitting and flaking off of the paper, small ink stain on the front board and some light stains on the rear board.. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket.
