New York: International Publishers, 1935. Revised Edition. First printing of the 1935 Revised Edition. Octavo. Tan cloth; dustjacket; xvii,341pp. Mild dusting to text block edges, else a tight, Near Fine copy. In the original dustwrapper, unclipped (priced $1.50 on front flap); sllightly rubbed and edgeworn, Very Good.

Hicks' major work, first published in 1933 and a milestone of Marxist literary criticism, generally considered the first comprehensive Marxist analysis of the American literary canon. In response to resolutions at the first International Writers Congress in Moscow, 1934, Hicks revised the work to include a chapter on the Proletarian Novel and to remove a few references to contemporary authors. Scarce in dustwrapper.
