About This Item
London and New York: Longmans, Green & Co, 1892 A very good copy of the 1st edition, 1st impression of the Green Fairy Book in the original green decorative cloth binding with gilt designs and title. With the original endpapers and aeg. With full page and text illustrations by H J Ford. The binding is in very good clean condition with a very bright spine, front and back board. There is a very small pale mark below the title and a slightly paler area at the top of the back board. The spine has light pulling to the ends and is slightly cocked to the front. Corners with light wear. Internally there is the pasted bookplate of Castlecraig Library to the top of the front pastedown endpaper. The contents are complete, clean and sound. There are a couple of faint marks on p28 and there is occasional light foxing - pp 160/161 being the most obvious. The backing is also visible between those pages but the binding and stitching are sound. Three pages have small bottom corner creases. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.
Synopsis
The Fairy Books, or "Coloured" Fairy Books is a collection of fairy tales divided into twelve books, each associated with a different colour. Collected together by Andrew Land they are sourced from a number of different countries and were translated by Lang's wife and other translators who also retold many of the tales. The collection has been incalculably important and, although he did not source the stories himself direct from the oral tradition he can make claim to the first English translation of many.First published in 1892, The Green Fairy Bookis the 3rd volume in this series.
