The Greenstone Door by Satchell, William - 1957

Auckland: Whitcombe & Tombs Limited, 1957 William Satchell (1860-1942) was born in England and emigrated to New Zealand in 1886. He wrote his first novel, The Land of the Last, in 1902. The sale item, The Greenstone Door, was first published in 1914. It describes incidents in the Maori Wars (1845-1872) and is recognized as a classic of the period. The book 'shows the events from both the Maori and the white point of view with authentic historical portraits and the author's passionate plea for understanding betwee the races.' Satchell is considered the first major New Zealand novelist. First published in 1914, reprinted in 1950 and again in 1957. Green paper boards with gold lettering on spine only. Binding tight and square with only flaw being a dedication to the previous owner dated 1958 on front free end page. Unclipped dust jacket carries no price. Minor wear at top of spine. Several small tears have been repaired. Only real problem is bumping along the top of the jacket due to improper placement. 12 mo (6.75 to 7.75 inches). 400 pages including notes and glossary
