About This Item

Toronto: McClelland and Stewart, 1967. 478 pp, large 8vo (9 13/16" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans, fold-out colour maps. "Volume I of Colonel Nicholson's definitive work traces the story of Canadian gunners from the days when the French used transformed naval guns against hostile natives to the intricately planned artillery barrages of the First World War. Having provided some fascinating back-ground information on the development of guns and gunners, the story moves through four vividly depicted centuries of military history - the period of the Ancien Regime, the American War of Inde-pendence, the War of 1812, the Fenian Raids, and the Boer War to the climatic, tragic years of the Great War. (T)he text is greatly enhanced by many lively first-hand quotations from letters, documents and diaries. The author also provides a comprehensive list of the valiant individuals who created the distinguished record of the Royal Canadian Artillery up until 1918." Book spine has light lean, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, bump at top corner of rear board - migrates into all pages - more at the rear than the front, minor bump to other corners of boards with slight migration into pages, a few light rub marks on rear board. Dust jacket has creasing/wrinkling/wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light to moderate edge wear elsewhere, light rubbing and few tiny scuffs, several edge tears with old tape repairs at the top/bottom inside edges.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good -/Fair.
