Softcover octavo, pp. vi, [2], 272. 17 plates including photographic frontispiece of the Author, plans and etchings, of which 2 double-page; numerous in-text illustrations throughout; large panoramic map of the wall to rear, printed on linen. Green cloth with gilt angel motif to upper board and gilt titles to spine. Cloth slightly rubbed and creased to spine tips; map shows minor staining to 2 panels; a Very Good copy. The popular guide to Hadrian's Wall, brought up-to-date to 1885 (the first printing was 1863) with additional plans and illustrations and an account of the Roman citizenship diploma found at the Chesters.
