A few black and white illustrations throughout, including a few hull outlines of approved steamers and an illustration of the ironclad monitor Dictator. A heavily mathematical based treatise on the steam engine, providing detailed mathematical formulas and principles to be used in applications for constructing steam engines and their various parts. With a section examining the mathematic principles behind navigation and steering in various bodies of water, as well as a section on the American monitors and their use. GOOD condition. Covers faded, with some soiling, minor staining and discoloration. Small chip in the cloth on the lower front cover. Extremities bumped and scuffed. Minor scattered foxing throughout. Owner's name stamp on the first endpaper. One page with math calculations in blue ink.
