BINDING/CONDITION: brown cloth with purple text; ownership note on the front endpaper, otherwise a Very Good book, with a Fair dust jacket; the dust jacket is not price clipped.. 8vo (about 9.25 inches tall) . Appendices, index. Description: The frontis, in faded tones, is from a painting by William H Jackson. Includes a double page map, one contemporary drawing, and four double sided black and white plates. The subtitle continues: ''with contemporary journals, accounts, reports; and rosters of members of the ten Handcart Companies.'' This is Volume Fourteen in the Far West and the Rockies series. As Stanley Paher in his Nevada bibliography says, a ''highly respected series of books, easily the best single source of south-western historical materials before 1860.'' (Note: the series name is not mentioned in this first edition of the book). The Hafens here tell the detailed story, much of it in the written words of the handcart pioneers, of this amazing exodus. The names of those in each handcart party appear her in the rosters of the companies, with the lists as complete as research can make them. Extensive appendices. From Lannon W Mintz in The Trail (no. 195): ''The Hafens tell of the ten Handcart Companies, including contemporary accounts by those involved, and even information on the handcarts themselves. Another nicely printed book from the Arthur H Clark Co.'' Eborn, Bibliography of Mormon Literature, page 171.
