Toronto: McClelland and Stewart, 1985. I'm convincing even myself of the plausibility of my own dire creation First edition, first printing, signed by the author on the title page. The Handmaid's Tale won the Arthur C. Clarke award in 1985 and has been adapted into a film (1990), an opera (2000), and, in 2017, a highly popular television series. The Canadian edition precedes all others.
The Handmaid's Tale secured Atwood's place as one of the most prominent writers of the 20th century. Her choice to construct Gilead - the setting of the book - from real-world events has sustained its relevance across decades, finding new readers and fuelling academic debates. "I made a rule for myself: I would not include anything that human beings had not already done in some other place or time, or for which the technology did not already exist. I did not wish to be accused of dark, twisted inventions, or of misrepresenting the human potential for deplorable behavior" ("Margaret Atwood on How She Came to Write The Handmaid's Tale", Lithub, 25 April 2018). Octavo. Original cream and red boards, spine lettered in cream, red endpapers. With dust jacket. Spine ends a little rubbed, pale foxing to top edge, otherwise clean; a near-fine copy in like dust jacket, spine panel and flaps toned, couple of light marks to panels, otherwise sharp and bright.
