About the author

John Essick is a professor at Reed College with research interests in the optoelectronic properties of semiconductors. His work focuses on experimental investigations of optically active electronic energy states (including those due to defects) in the thin-film non-crystalline semiconductor materials used in photovoltaic cells as well as in semiconductor quantum dots. Since 1993, he has taught computer-based experimentation using LabVIEW as part of Reed's junior-level Advanced Laboratory and used LabVIEW to carry out many research projects.
