About This Item

Lincoln, NE and Fort Worth, TX: (1977-1986): Nebraska University and Texas Christian University. Octavo. ). In four volumes. Vol. I: The Correspondence; Vol. II: The Marke- Place; Vol. III The Damnation of Theron Ware or Illumination: Vol. IV; Gloria Mundi. Published between 1977 and 1986 in a joint project by Texas Christian University and the University of Nebraska. This was the definitive study of his life. As the "cleric" or minister became objects of either scorn or no consequence, Coleman Parson traces this change to Harold Frederic. For instance, in Theron Ware the complex forces facing Western man in the 19th century tempt the protagonist from the simple piety of the ministry. As J.R.K. Kantor notes the treatment of religious doctrine and the 'liberal' viewpoints illustrated the contemporary clash between liberal theology and Princeton's conservative orthodoxy. Frederic's correspondence is scattered though Princeton has the largest number. His excellent literary style makes this the ideal beginning place to begin to see his mind at work. Vol. I, 615 pages; Vol. II, 488 pages; Vol. III, 506 pages, Vol. IV, 481 pages. With these 2000+ pages, we have the best introduction to a person of literary importance has been rediscovered and here printed for the first time since the end of the 19th century with pages of notes, introduction, and biographical information placed together for the first time. A handsome, near fine set bound in 1/4 black cloth over green cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt. Very nice.
