This is a beautiful copy of the 1st American edition without the number 2 on the top of the spine panel with its original price of $17.95 stated on the front flap and the correct number sequence. 1 very teeny tiny hardly visible nick to the top edge of the front panel and a very faint tiny smudge on the top edge. Fine/fine. Laid in is a small 68pg. production booklet for the film "Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban which has cast bios and notes on the making of the film. Fine.

About this book

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. The story follows Harry Potter, a young wizard attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, as he and his friends Ron and Hermione investigate a series of attacks on students by a mysterious monster. Harry discovers the monster is actually a basilisk, a giant serpent that can kill with a single glance. With the help of his friends and new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Gilderoy Lockhart, Harry must enter the Chamber of Secrets to defeat the basilisk and save his schoolmates, including Ron's younger sister Ginny who has been taken hostage by the evil wizard, Tom Riddle.

Summary

When the Chamber of Secrets is opened again at the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, second-year student Harry Potter finds himself in danger from a dark power that has once more been released on the school.

First Edition Identification

The first edition of Harry Potter and Chamber of Secrets was published in the UK by Bloomsbury, in 1998. "First published in Great Britain in 1998" is stated on the copyright page with a number line of “10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1”, and the printer stated as "Clays Ltd, St Ives plc”.

The boards are illustrated to match the dust jacket, which has a price of £10.99 on the bottom corner of the front flap. The two reviews printed on the dust jacket were by The Sunday Times, and The Independent on Saturday. Early printings lack the Hogwarts logo on the copyright page which was later added to hardcover editions. First printings of the paperback edition do have the logo. 

Printed in 1999 by Scholastic Press, the first US edition of Harry Potter and Chamber of Secrets is also very valued in the book market. The copyright page has the full number line "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1       9/9 0/0 1 2 3 4". "First American edition, June 1999" is stated on the same page. Boards are in blue with an embossed diamond pattern and a green cloth spine. The original price was $17.95. 

Note -  there are book club editions that have the same full number line, but they don’t have the diamond pattern on the boards.

About the author

Mary GrandPr has illustrated more than twenty beautiful books, including The Noisy Paint Box by Barb Rosenstock, which received a Caldecott Honor; Cleonardo, the Little Inventor, of which she is also the author; and the original American editions of all seven Harry Potter novels. Her work has also appeared in the New Yorker, the Atlantic Monthly, and the Wall Street Journal, and her paintings and pastels have been shown in galleries across the United States. Ms. GrandPr lives in Sarasota, Florida, with her family.

J.K. Rowling is the author of the enduringly popular Harry Potter books. After the idea for Harry Potter came to her on a delayed train journey in 1990, she plotted out and started writing the series of seven books and the first was published as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in the UK in 1997. The series took another ten years to complete, concluding in 2007 with the publication of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

To accompany the series, J.K. Rowling wrote three short companion volumes for charity, Quidditch Through the Agesand Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, in aid of Comic Relief and Lumos, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard, in aid of Lumos. She also collaborated on the writing of a stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which was published as a script book.

Her other books for children include the fairy tale The Ickabog and The Christmas Pig, which were published in 2020 and 2021 respectively and have also been bestsellers. She is also the author of books for adults, including a bestselling crime fiction series.
