About This Item
Garden City: Doubleday, Page, 1911. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. W.L. Jacobs. Octavo, 564 pages, embossed tan cloth, lightly soiled, non-authorial inked inscription on pictorial endpaper, some spotting inside, rear hinge cracking.
First State with "Published August, 1911" added to copyright page; first state w. printer's slug on copyright page [ MacLean A8a ]. Consistent with MacLean's descriptions, my copy has the August, 1911 on the copyright page, and the bottom of page 564 is blank. Matching his state 1. BUT, my copy has undamaged type on pages 7, 30, and 25. Now, undamaged type means either that the damaged type has been replace, or that the type is in its original state, before it became damaged. Because MacLean's states 2 & 3 both feature damaged type, then I must conclude that my copy precedes MacLean's state 1, and is, arguably, the earliest state. Illustrated by W. L. Jacobs in color.

About Thomas J. Joyce And Company
Joyce And Company has been in business as a professional rare bookseller and appraiser since 1975. Owner Thomas Joyce was the regular book appraiser on Home & Garden TV\'s \"The Appraisal Fair\\\" program, on international broadcasts. Thomas Joyce was the co-discoverer of George Washington's personal copy of William Leybourn's 1679 edition of THE COMPLEAT SURVEYOR, from which young Washington learned some of his surveying skills at age 16. The book had vanished for nearly a century until its re-discovery in 2017. It is now back at Mt. Vernon.
