A sequel & final resolustion to The Monkey Wrench Gang (1975 novel Smithsonian judged ribald, outrageous & scandalous), by naturalist Edward Abbey (1927 - 1989), in which ex-Green Beret & wilderness avenger gang member George Washington Hayduke, III, hunted by a posse, was left clinging to sheer rock. Years have passed since cliff-hanger Hayduke escaped with the aid of Fred Goodsell (or "Kemosabe", hero of Abbey's 1st novel, The Brave Cowboy) now back fighting despoilers of Mother Earth. In this final, posthumourly published novel, Hayduke returns to the deserts of Utah & Arizona, and is joined by former gang members to sabotage the world's largest earth moving machine known as GEM or GOLIATH, and to subdue a greed-ridden Mormon Bishop for the sake of southwest America. Other re-sufacing characterss Abbey spent less time developing in Monkey Wrench Gang such as Bishop Love, wives of Seldom Seen Smith and the FBI agents sent to curtail conservationists.
