The Monastery of St. John the Theologian at Patmos, founded in 1088 A.D. by Saint Christodoulos, is the most important monument of the island, dominated by the strongly fortified character over Chora, the main village. During the 925 years of unbroken life of the monastery, the building has followed the adventures and history of the Aegean and received successive modifications, construction additions or repairs; so today is an impressive fortified residential complex with unique architectural character. Because of the great wealth of its library and artistic treasures accumulated over the years it received the attention of many researchers. However, the lack, so far, of systematic architectural documentation did not allow the formation of a comprehensive picture of the building history.
