Published by William Heinemann, London; 1909. quarto. First edition, first printing. Fine condition. Signed by author on tipped in half title.
These 2 exceptional volumes are the first issue of the first edition of Shackleton's first hand account of one of the most celebrated Antarctic expedition. Bound in custom half calf gilt bindings, these volumes show very few signs of wear or ageing. The bindings are tight and in excellent condition, and apart from some minor toning and spotting to the original uncut pages, there is no damage or marks to speak of. The first volume is signed "Yours truly E. H. Shackleton" on tipped-in half title. These are an incredibly rare find, with only one or two signed copies currently available for sale, including this one.
These volumes constitute one of the most important works in their area of expertise, with Shackleton's description of the "Nimrod" expedition of 1907-09 being one of the classic narratives of Polar exploration. There were three goals for this much-celebrated Antarctic expedition; First - to reach the Pole; Second - to plant a flag at the magnetic South pole; and third - to explore the Ross Barrier. These were ambitious goals and, although unable to achieve them all, the expedition was overall considered successful. The accounts of this exploration are fascinating and have contributed considerably to further expeditions and the knowledge we now have of the region.
These volumes are exceptional examples of these important works and would be the ultimate crowning jewel of any rare book collection focussing on exploration or the Antarctic. Please don't hesitate to contaact us if you have any questions regarding these beautiful books.

Additionally, this copy is inscribed, dated and signed in ink by Frost on bound-in title Page. Illustrated with a photographic Frontis of Robert Frost. Robert Lee Frost (1874 1963) was, arguably the most important but, certainly the most popular American poet of the 20th century."Although his work is principally associated with the life and landscape of New England, and though he was a poet of traditional verse forms and metrics who remained steadfastly aloof from the poetic movements and fashions of his time, Frost was anything but a mere regional poet. The author of searching and often dark meditations on universal themes, he was a quintessentially modern poet in his adherence to language as it is actually spoken, in…
