About the author

David Hempleman-Adams was the first man to reach all four geographic and magnetic poles. He has climbed the highest mountains in all seven continents. I n 1996 he completed a solo expedition to the South Pole and sailed to the South Magnetic Pole.

Sophie Gordon is curator of the Royal Photograph Collection. She was formerly associate curator of the Alkazi Collection of Photography, and has published widely on nineteenth-century photography.

Emma Stuart is assistant bibliographer in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle.
