London: Burns and Oates, 1917. 1st Edition . Very Good. 5.25 x 7.5 inches (13.5 x 19.5 cm). Signed by Author. First printing. Green buckram binding. Top page edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Browning to spine and edges of boards. Slight rubbing to spine and corners of boards. Light browning to page edges and endpapers, very clean text throughout. Binding strained at p40 but securely bound. Recent owner's name sticker to front pastedown endpaper. Inscribed and signed by the author to American scholar and archaeologist Thomas Whittemore on the front free endpaper: 'The love of Alice Meynell, to Thomas Whittemore, London 1918'. Includes essays on Charlotte and Emily Bronte, and Charles Dickens. A rare signed example. Overall condition is Very Good. Size: 5.25 x 7.5 inches (13.5 x 19.5 cm). Hardback. Printed pages: 8vo.
