New York: Doubleday, 1958. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First US edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 21.5 × 14.5cm, 261pp. Signed and dedicated by Norah Lofts to the ffep, "For dear Mrs Orpen, with love and best wishes from Norah. November 1958". A collection of sixteen short stories from Norah Lofts that vary in mood and subject. Many are set in England, past and present; others in the Far East, and one in Africa. They include "All That is Necessary" which tells of a woman who, presumably, is running a good home for old ladies; and "The Black Christ of Alderward" which is a frightening tour de force about a painter and his model. Condition: The book is in very good condition, with some light foxing to the fore-edge of the upper board. The dustwrapper is slightly tanned to the joints with light chipping to the edges but has not been price-clipped and is now within a protective sleeve.
