Illustrated card wrapper nominally edgeworn only. Textblock lightly tanned, else unmarked. While convalescing from illness contracted at Gallipoli, former Gippsland, Victoria farmer Sydney Loch (1888-1955) wrote of his experiences of war using a detailed war diary he had secretly kept. Written as a novel, using the pen name Sydney de Loghe, and titled 'The Straits Impregnable', the first printing sold out quickly. The publisher's second printing carried the note that the work was in fact a true memoir - and immediatley Australian military censors pounced, seizing and destroying all copies and enforcing a long-term ban. The de Vries have brought the story to the modern reader . . . Contents include: Prelims., Introduction. Prologue. Editors' Note. The Straits Impregnable (14 chapters). Epilogue. Endnotes. Acks.
