New York: Private Distribution, 1917. First printing. Hardcover. Very good condition. Small 8vo, 31 pp, photographic portrait frontispiece & 2 plates. Quarter brown cloth and papered boards, with bronze-like cover medal impression with motto "Do Right and Fear No Man". The medal is reproduced with permission of the American Fund For French Wounded. A privatly published Memorial book for Henry Augustus Coit, [1888-1916] a prominent American volunteer in the Canadian Army. Coit was a Harvard graduate who died in WWI The book describes official reports, letters from him and from nurses/chaplain/commanding officers while in service. "Memorial Volumes", compiled by Miss Eleanor D Monroe of Harvard Library, "It is felt that many of his friends would like to know the facts and incidents of Henry Coit's service as a volunteer in the Great War..." Henry's father Joseph Howland Coit was a teacher at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. After teaching, he went into the New York publishing business.He also enlisted in World War I where he attained the rank of Major. . Presentation copy from Mrs. Coit. to William Evarts.
