A man of enormous talent and versatility, for fourteen years the secretary of the NAACP, Johnson was a distinguished poet, novelist, essayist, lecturer, song writer, lawyer, diplomat, editor, teacher, and education administrator. He was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, educated at Atlanta University and Columbia University, taught and was a school principal in Florida, a U.S. consul in Venezuela and Nicaragua, and towards the end of his life filled a professorship at Fisk University.
His books include the fictional Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, and a collection of free verse sermons, "God's Trombones", and he collaborated in the writing of popular songs and light opera with great success. In 1915, the year of the publishing of "Her Eyes Twin Pools", the Metropolitan produced the opera Goyescas, for which Johnson wrote the English libretto.
