About This Item

Munich, Germany: Bertelsmann Verlag GmbH, 1979. A2 - A German language edition hard cover book in very good condition. A tight, clean, sound copy in red cloth covered boards with very minor overall shelf wear with some light foxing of the outside paper edges plus the book is very slightly shelf cocked. The dust jacket has very minor overall shelf wear. In the Thirty Years War, while Wallenstein, Tilly and Gustav Adolf were devastating Germany, many thousands of innocent women and girls died at the stake. A man becomes the conscience of his time: the priest and poet Friedrich Spee. In 'Der Hexenawalt' (The Witches Bar) the setting is 1629 and Germany is a land of the burning pyre. War atrocities, famine and pestilence have depopulated towns and villages. God cannot be blamed for this misery! Who else could be guilty but the devil and his wicked assistants: Satan's brides, the witches. All evil is believed to come from these women. Thousands of confessions were forced under torture during the ensuing witch hunt. The Jesuit Father Spee and his pupil Philip of Kronthal are among the few who know that all these women and girls are innocent: victims of superstitious delusion and sexual perversion. Friedrich Spee, priest, poet and incorruptible critic of the authorities is the focus of this major novel of Germany in the Thirty Years War. In the conflict between obedience and rebellion, irritated by the powerful personality of Weibischofs Johannes Pelking, Spee knows that violence cannot be answered with violence. Hoping for the victory of reason, he completes his famous work 'Cautio Criminalis', to the fury of the judges and torturers would finally be forced to stop using torture to extract confessions. As in Lohmeyer's first novel, 'Die Hexe' (The Witch), the reader experiences in this book a wealth of colorful, figurative and dramatic scenes as this novel follows vast stretches of the historical record of the life of Friedrich Spee von Langenfeld. From the Hildesheim Jesuit college to Denmark to Wallenstein's dragoons to Paderborn hiding the 'midwife witch' Barbara. From the terrible fires of Geseke where the Witches Commissioner Dr. Schultheiss is raging to the field headquarters of General Tilly on the western shore to Sweden and to the very walls of the oppressed free imperial city of Cologne. Wolfgang Lohmeyer, born 1919 in Berlin, lives in the countryside near Munich. He has written poetry, plays and television dramas and the historical novel 'Die Hexe' (The Witch) set in 17th century Cologne. Jahrhunderts spielt. 5.5"x8.3", 414 seiten (pages). Zufriedenheit garantiert (satisfaction guaranteed).. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
