"A remarkable attempt to explain symbolism of the Egyptian and ancient mythology" (Gregorovius)

Pierio Valeriano Bolzani was an important early 16th-century Italian humanist most-known for his extensive studies and works on Egyptian hieroglyphics. His best work, 'Hieroglyphica,'is a study on hieroglyphics and the use of allegory throughout Egyptian culture. When Horapollo's work of hieroglyphics was rediscovered, Valeriano sought to publish a work during the craze for knowledge on hieroglyphics. While it took a while for the work to be completed, it is often considered the most concise representation of Egyptian symbols, even though it was largely influenced by Horapollo.

A rare 16th-century printing of works of John Chrysostom. Chrysostom was one of the most important Early Christian Church authors and preachers and is most remembered for his sermons and homilies. He preached on many different subjects, but his most frequented topic was helping the needy. Chrysostom calls for followers of Jesus to set aside their material desires to help the poor, often in a way that shamed the rich and guilted them in to giving.

Thomas Thornton was an 18th-century English hunter known for his sporting tours and outdoor sports. Shortly after the French Revolution in 1802, Thornton ventured to France in hopes of obtaining a large French estate. And while the purchase failed, he was befriended by Napoleon
and gained significant knowledge on the landscape, tradition, culture, and hunting history of France.
In 1806 he published a book on his discovery entitled 'A Sporting Tour Through Various Parts of France'. This two volume set includes more than 50 engravings, many folding, of French architecture, hunting supplies, landscapes and chateaus (including Versailles!), as well as illustrated hunting scenes!

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort was a 17th-century botanist who is best known for his work 'Elements of Botany'. In this book, Tournefort made important contributions to botanical nomenclature, identifying the divisions in flowering plants and make distinctions between genus and species. This 1719 Latin edition entitled 'Institutiones rei Herbariae', collects and describes nearly 7,000 different plant species many of which include impressive botanical illustrations.
Included with this volume are letters written and signed by famed French botanists Louis Claude Marie Richard (1754–1821) and his son, Achille Richard (1794–1852). Both were esteemed botanists of their time and taught at the French National Academy of Medicine.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
