About This Item
New York, New York, U.S.A.: Public Affairs, LLC, 2009. 803pp/illus. An epic examination of the life of one of the most confounding American political figures of the past half century . Once considered among the best and brightest of his generation, Donald Rumsfeld was exceptionally prepared by successful careers in politics and business to assume the Pentagon's top job in 2001. Yet six years later, he left office as the most controversial Defense Secretary since Robert McNamara, widely criticized for his management of the Iraq war and for his difficult relationships with Congress, administration colleagues, and military officers. Was he really the arrogant, errant, overcontrolling Pentagon leader frequently portrayed or as his supporters contend, a brilliant, hardcharging visionary caught in a whirl of polarized Washington politics, dysfunctional federal bureaucracy, and bad luck? Clean. 1st Printing. Cloth. As New/As New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Reviews
On Apr 24 2014, a reader said:
Bradley Graham's biography of the controversial defense secretary is very much a reporter's book. Relying heavily on hundreds of interviews, he rarely offers his own analysis or opinions. When he does, though, they are all the more powerful for them. Concentrating on Rumsfeld's second term as Secretary of Defense (which takes up two-thirds of the book), he portrays Rumsfeld as a micromanager obsessed with transforming the military, even as the war in Iraq raised doubts about the appropriateness of many of his ideas. Even a book as favorable to Rumsfeld as this one is ultimately can do no better than offer a mixed assessment of his legacy, as the evidence Graham marshals makes it difficult to disagree with his conclusions. Because of this, it will likely serve for some time as the standard work on Rumsfeld and his management of America's war in Iraq.
