About the author

Francisco Lopez de Gomara (Gomara, 1512-1572). Los biografos no se ponen de acuerdo sobre las fechas de su nacimiento y muerte, parece que vivio entre 1510 y 1560. Nacio en Sevilla y estudio en la Universidad de Alcala. Fue uno de los principales cronistas de la conquista espanola de America;enseno lenguas clasicas en la Universidad de Alcala y despues se hizo sacerdote y fue secretario y capellan de Hernan Cortes. Lopez de Gomara presencio muchos acontecimientos militares de su epoca como secretario y capellan de Cortes y conocio de cerca el temperamento de este y las intrigas politicas y militares de su epoca. Participo en la expedicion contra Argelia de 1541, liderada por el monarca Carlos V;ironicamente, se informo de la historia de la conquista en medio de aquella contienda africana y nunca estuvo en America. Algunos dicen que por eso su obra fue prohibida por Felipe II, acusada de no ser fiel a los hechos. Entre otros libros suyos cabe citar sus cronicas de las batallas libradas por la armada de Carlos V y algun texto sobre las tropelias de los piratas del Mediterraneo.
