He married the niece of Inigo Jones and became his personal assistant from 1628. On Jones' death in 1652, Webb inherited both a substantial fortune and his library of drawings and designs. In 1654 Webb designed the first classical portico on an English country house, at The Vyne in Hampshire. This book is the first extensive treatise on the Chinese language in any European language. In it Webb proposes that the Chinese language was the language that was spoken throughout the world before Noahs flood. He also discusses Chinese culture and the ancient origins of the Chinese empire. This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire… Read More

Only Haru Reischauer could have written this extraordinary family account, beginning with her two illustrious grandfathers: one, a provincial samurai who became a founding father of the Meiji government; the other, a scion of a wealthy enterprising peasant family who almost single-handedly developed the silk trade with America. Remarkable stories, those of their notable descendants, demonstrate the unbounded vision - determination that explain so much about Japan's legendary success.... history Japan bibliography Samurai and Silk: A Japanese and American Heritage by Haru M. "The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting."Scars and bruises may fade, but we must remember what caused them. The purpose of《Wounds of Hong Kong》is to record police brutality. All 24 interviewees have sacrificed in their own ways during the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement. Among the thousands wounded, they are only a few. I would like to sincerely thank them for sharing their experience, insights, and feelings to me. I remember at the beginning of the resistance outbreak in June of 2019. As a photographer/journalist, I felt unsure. Protesters all covered their faces with masks, so how could I tell their stories? How can I search their ethos beneath the masks? However, my worry was quickly swept away as I realized that they weren't the only ones… Read More
