This is a binding copy as the boards are missing. The binding is tight with the leaves quite clean and have foxing mostly at the front end There is a library stamp on the title page..

Occasional old stamps of a defunct mercantile library, some isolated spotting in upper margin of a few signatures in the second volume, otherwise a very good, crisp set. First edition of this important work by one intimately involved in the events it chronicles. The extensive appendices in the second volume contain a wealth of correspondence and transcripts of primary documents and records. "In 1825 the agitation for catholic emancipation revived in Ireland, and Wyse, returning with his family to Waterford, instantly took a leading part in politics. At the first great provincial meeting in Limerick, consisting of liberal protestants as well as catholics, he was unanimously elected chairman...Thenceforward in the struggle for emancipation Wyse ranked near O'Connell and Sheil. Lord O'Hagan states that of all the politicians of the day, Wyse was the most accomplished and highly cultured. When the Catholic Association, which Wyse's great- grandfather and the O'Conor Don first founded in 1760, decided on issuing an address to the people of England, he was chosen to compose it. He also originated a system of liberal clubs, but opposed exclusive dealing. He, too, was principally instrumental in getting up the great Rotunda meeting in 1828 to petition for emancipation... as soon as emancipation was granted, Wyse published 'A Letter to my Fellow Countrymen,' recommending the dissolution of the Catholic Association, since its object had been achieved and the country needed quiet. Immediately afterwards he published the 'Historical Sketch of the Catholic Association' " - DNB. Uncommon in commerce.

Previous owner armorial bookplate (Isaac Holden, politician and inventor of a wool-combing machine, who received a Baronetcy in 1893) and also ink name and address stamped to the front blank free endpapers. Some foxing to the blank endpapers otherwise a very good bright and clean set throughout. All three volumes in fine nineteenth century bindings of full tan calf. Spines with raised bands, the compartments ruled and fully decorated in gilt. Red and green labels, gilt. Boards with double gilt ruled borders. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Some minor rubbing to edges but generally a very good copy in attractive nineteenth century bindings. The bindings are unsigned but very high quality work.

Scarce First Edition. MacMillan, London 1899.Written by Stephen Gwynn (1864-1950), who was a one time Irish Nationalist MP for Galway, the book is a type of travel guide for the Ulster counties of Donegal and Antrim.
The book contains a total of 87 lovely illustrations by the noted Irish illustrator Hugh Thomson (1860-1920).
Book is is in very good condition. Green coloured boards with gilt lettering. Top edge of text block gilt, others rough cut. Some fading to boards particularly spine with head and tail rubbed. Binding good. Internally clean with no foxing, markings or inscriptions.
There is a pull out map of the counties in very good condition.
Front pastedown has the bookplate of previous owner, Matthew Mackey, a Newcastle upon Tyne collector. There is also a tiny label of Newcastle upon Tyne bookshop (Mawson, Swan & Morgan). A lovely copy in collectible condition.More images can be provided.
