First edition, octavo, pp. 200. Frontis view of Public Square, St. Augustine, and 6 other tissue-guarded plates. This copy presented by the author to Bishop Stephen Elliott, son of the famous naturalist, and the first bishop of the Protestant Episcopal church in Georgia. As bishop and head of the University of the South, Elliott wrote about, and was instrumental as a leader in, the movement taking the Episcopal Church in the South out of the national church in the run-up to the Civil War. Fairbanks, a native of Watertown, NY, settled in St. Augustine in 1842 but lived in Sewanee, TN, from 1860-1880. He became a Trustee of the University of the South in 1857. A very good presentation copy rebound in blue buckram with gilt-stamped spine at Wells Bindery, Waltham, Mass., in 1965. And like Hal Smith in his book "On the Gathering of a Library," we "confess an affection for the presentation copy. The author had it in his hand. He turned its pages. He wrote in it his message of friendship or affection. Such a book is somehow consecrated. It has received an accolade and has been raised to the nobility (57)."
