About This Item

Newcastle: Longman & Co, 1826. 2 Vols. Half green leather over green cloth. Bindings tight, spines straight, corners solid. Five raised bands on spines. Gilt titles on red spine labels for each volume. Gilt page ends. Marbled endpapers. Slight foxing to preliminary pages, but text block remains clean. Previous owner's bookplate (Lavra Mary Forster) on front paste down of each book. Forster was the aunt of the writer E.M. Forster and a person of some note in her own right. She was acquainted with the designer William Morris and created blind-tooled and stamped leather work for books she owned. Some of her designs appeared as part of the Arts and Crafts Exhibitions Society's 1889 exhibit. She was also a lifelong friend and frequent correspondent of Charles Darwin's eldest daughter, Henrietta. The sixth edition of this title is significant for Bewick's substantial rewriting of portions of the previous editions. He opted for a more scientific presentation, and he added new birds to the edition. . Sixth Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo.
