London: C. Cooke 171 pp, iv, 150 pp, 16 mo (6 1/4" H). No date - c1800. Two novels bound together. Leather spine with five raised bands with gilt banding, red leather title label with gilt lettering. Leather corners, brown paper-covered boards. Edges of text block untrimmed. Four b&w plates. Small b&w decoration on title page and 2 small b&w decorative tailpieces. Charles Cooke was located at 17 Paternoster Row from 1789-1817, and began publishing a series of small format classics "embellished with engravings c1793." Here, Voltaire's Candid (Candide) leads a life of adventure, encompassing whipping, shipwreck, escape from cannibals, etc. before finding Eldorado and wealth. With: Marmontel's "Belisarius", the story of a Byzantine general and the ingratitude of the powerful to their faithful servants. Very light browning to edges of page margins, 1" edge tear to page leaf 141/142, very small hole in text of page leaf 137/138, areas of foxing/browning to endpapers - mainly on front endpaper, light foxing/browning to frontispiece/plates and adjacent pages, a few small foxing marks last few pages, heavy browning to paper on boards, moderate edge wear to boards, one small bump at top/bottom of rear board, small bump to board corners, age darkening to edges of text block.. Cooke's Edition.. Half-Leather. Good.
