About the author

Sir John Edwin Sandys (1844-1922) was one of the outstanding classical scholars of his generation. A Fellow of St Johns College, Orator Emeritus at Cambridge University, and Lane Lecturer at Harvard University (1905), he received honorary degrees from the universities of Oxford, Dublin, Edinburgh and Athens. He was President of the Philological Society and President of the Classical Society. Among his notable works are A Dictionary of Classical Antiquities, Mythology, Religion, Literature, and Art (1891), The Harvard Lectures on the Revival of Learning (1905), Introduction to Latin Epigraphy, and (as supervising editor) A Companion to Classical Studies (1913). He remains best known, however, for the History of Classical Scholarship. He received his knighthood in 1911.
