"Philip Sheldon Foner (1910-1994), an American labor historian and teacher. was one of the most prominent Marxist historians in the United States, with a prolific output encompassing over 110 volumes covering a wide range of topics, including the history of American labor, the history of African American literature, and the history of American socialism. Foner was born in New York City to a working-class Jewish immigrant family. He earned his PhD from Columbia University in 1941. He taught at a number of institutions, including Lincoln University, a historically black college in Pennsylvania, where he served as the head of the history department. Foner's work was often controversial due to his Marxist perspective and his focus on the role of working people and minorities in American history. His most famous work is probably his multi-volume "History of the Labor Movement in the United States," which remains a standard reference in the field. Foner was also known for his work on African American history. His five-volume "History of Black Americans" was one of the first comprehensive histories of African Americans, and his edited collection of the writings of Frederick Douglass helped to revive interest in Douglass's work. Despite his significant contributions to the field of history, Foner was often marginalized by the academic establishment due to his political beliefs. He was blacklisted during the McCarthy era and struggled to find permanent academic employment. Nonetheless, his work has had a lasting impact on the study of American history, particularly in the fields of labor history and African American history."
