Classic account of the Donner Party's 1846 - 1847 fatal journey west on the Oregon Trail. Also known as the Donner-Reed Party, it was a wagon train heading to California from Missouri anticipated to take about 4 to 6 months. Delayed by mishaps, they would be hemmed in by early Sierra mountain snows near Truckee. Cattle lost, survivors were driven to cannibalism before releif arrived some 4 months latter. Of the 87 men, women & children 48 lived. Greatest of tragedies in America's move to inhabit the West. 261 pgs. in 24 chapters w/illustrations, maps and charts.
