A History of the Earth and Animated Nature [in Two Volumes], byOliver Goldsmith, with Numerous Notes from the Works of the Most Distinguished British and Foreign Naturalists. Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London: Blackie and Son. 1866. Two volume set.
Goldsmith's History of the Earth and Animated Nature was first published in the year of his death, 1774, and owed its origin to the writings of Buffon. The 1866 edition was published without change to the original, but with notes added by the publisher to correct or illustrate the text. [Adapted from the Preface]
This makes this two-volume set particularly interesting, in that modern classification is NOT included. Instead, he discusses categories like "quadrupeds of the hog kind" and animals of the "monkey kind--the elephant, rhinoceros..." as examples.
It is important to note that he included interpretations of people, places, and general nature, not just animals, birds, and insects. A spectacular 1874 two-volume set which inspired much interest in Great Britain and worldwide at a time when natural history was pretty much ignored.
Color plates are phenomenal in their beauty, black and white also hold good detail. This set is not to be overlooked for its artistic beauty as well as its historical significance.
Condition: This original half-bound leather two-volume set is a real beauty! Gilt labels are new as shown, but all else is original. Conservation includes interior hinges and leather repair to spine of volume II. We carefully photograph our items so that you can review details of condition. After your review of the photos, please ask any questions or request additional photos from us so that you can make the best buying decision.
