ESTC Citation No. N8500.First appearing between 1754 and 1761, this History of England was David Hume's magnum opus, held as the standard history of England in its day and running over one hundred editions. A best-seller, it ensured financial stability for its author. Intended to be a critical examination of recent events, Hume did not intend for any recent figures of history to be either demonised or glorified.Hume's contribution began with Caesar's invasion and finished with the Revolution of 1688.David Hume (1711-1776) was a philosopher and writer of the Scottish Enlightenment.With the author's final corrections and improvements, as well as a short autobiographical sketch of his life.Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author to the first volume.Complete in eight volumes.An early, complete collection of Hume's historically significant and thorough history. In a contemporary full tree calf binding. Externally a trifle rubbed; joints are all starting, with loss to the heads of the spines and bumping to the extremities. Volume VIII has a split running down the length of the spine. Volumes II and VIII have some loss to the spine labels. Rubbing to the head of volume VI, I and II in particular. Front endpaper is loose to the first volume, and lacking to the third volume. Internally, binding is generally firm; the cords are exposed to the first page of the index in volume VIII. Pages are generally bright and clean, with occasional light spotting. Good
