An account of the reigns of Kings of Britain, from the supposed first King, Brutus or Brute of Troy, through the reign of James I, beginning in 1603. The account of events during each King's reign is separated into its own chapter. The author, Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605-1675), was a lawyer and high-ranking officer (Lord Commissioner of the the Great Seal) of the English Crown. The title page states that this work was "Publish'd from his Original Manuscript, by William Penn, Esq.; Governour of Pennsylvania." Also includes "The Author's Life, and A Preface" by James Welwood, M.D. Indexed. --- In brown leather with tooling to front and back panels. Spine with 7 compartments and 6 raised bands; once with gilt titling. --- A detached front cover has been re-attached by a professional bookbinder, using a new piece of leather along the full length of the front joint. (Receipt for this repair is laid in.) With no shortage of foxing to leaves; leather with scuffs and small tears. The front free endpaper has been torn out and a one-inch square section of the final leaf has been neatly excised. Overall the binding has been stabilized and remains sturdy.
