Philadelphia: Bradford and Inskeep, 1814. First Edition. Full-Leather. Two volumes, octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2"); xxviii[470]; ix[1]522 pages. Original publisher's tree sheep, red leather lettering pieces on spines. With the large engraved FOLDING MAP from an early printing (1842, which is the second earliest map available only after the 1817 Dublin edition), as well as the eastern one fifth of the original map, and 5 engraved plans and charts. An exceptional copy, larger than usual with wider margins; internally very good, with minimal browning and foxing; expertly rebacked with original spine and labels laid on. Short closed marginal tear, volume I, page 61 and 119 and volume II, page 201, none affecting text. The folding map was not issued with all copies and actually was separately priced, nearly as much as the book. Thomas Jefferson had first proposed exploring the west to George Rogers Clark in 1783. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 spurred Jefferson to implement his idea - Lewis and Clark covered nearly 8 thousand miles in just over 28 months. Their hope was to find a water route across the continent, but they did not. "The definitive account of the most important exploration of the North American continent." (Wagner-Camp 13, Howes L-317).

London: Printed for H.Bonwicke, T.Goodwin, M.Wotton, B.Tooke, and S.Manship, 1703. First Edition of the English Translation. Lahontan was only sixteen years of age when he first arrived in New France in 1683, as an officer in the colonial regular troops. During the next ten years he saw active service in the sieur de La Barres expedition against the Iroquois in 1684, in the Marquis de Denonvilles campaign against the Senecas in 1687, and in numerous skirmishes with the English. In 1693 he was appointed Kings lieutenant in Plaisance (Placentia), Newfoundland. His career, however, came to an abrupt end when he was accused of insubordination by the governor of Newfoundland, Jacques François de Brouillan. Lahontan fled to Portugal and spent the rest of his life in wandering exile, chiefly in Holland and Germany. The daily journals Lahontan faithfully kept during his stay in New France for the basis of this work, which gained such immense popularity that it went through no less…

American Colonies, 1775. Original engraved boxwood block, 3 x 4 inches, three-quarters-inch deep, together with a uniformly framed modern impression. A few hair-line surface clefts and two larger clefts, one along the flag's edge and the other at flag center. Exceptionally rare and well-preserved Revolutionary War artifact depicting one of the most famous and enduring symbols and mottos of the colonial fight for independence.. Remarkable eighteenth-century engraved woodblock depicting an uncoiled rattlesnake against the thirteen-stripe flag emblazoned with the motto "Don't Tread on Me" set diagonally below. This original woodblock would have been used during the Revolutionary War to reproduce this defiant cartoon in colonial pamphlets, newspapers, and broadsides during the fight for independence. The cartoon's thirteen stripes represented the thirteen colonies, and the threatening serpent posed a striking warning to those who would dare tread upon their freedom.
