Brewer and Tileston, Boston, 1855. Acceptable. Probably first U.S. ed.--"Preface of the American Editor" by C.C. Felton is dated same year as copyright; pref. by Prof. Smith is dated 1853; 670 p. including two prefaces and index, unmarked except for front paste down and end page, which has name of former owner in ink and penciled notations; frontis. engraving shows "Photographic View of Athens;" other engrvings, ill. and maps. Front gutter is cracked and tooled leather spine is rubbed, esp. at crown--gilt lettering cler; black board much smudged and bumped, with a portion of cloth missing from lower front corner.The paper is very strong but age-toned and quite foxed in places; the front matter and first 20 pages show damp stains on edges.
