LONDON : George Bell & Sons, 1872 A nice set complete in 4 volumes with 132 hand coloured plates as called for. In green half leather bindings with gilt titles. The marbled boards are matched by the marbled endpapers. Teg. All the volumes have some rubbing to the leather principally at the edges and corners and along the joints. The spines have faded to a sage green colour. All the bindings are sound and tight. The contents have some light spotting in places but are otherwise very nice and clean with good quality plates. Vol I has some foxing to preliminaries and this extends to the frontispiece and title page and some of the blank pages at the end. The remaining contents are in nice clean condition and the plates are tissue guarded. The plate numbering changes from latin to arabic at times. Vol II has some foxing to preliminaries as in Vol I but is generally clean and bright otherwise. Vol III is without a tissue guard to the frontispiece but is clean and bright throughout. Paternoster Row. & C Loddiges & Sons, Hackney, 1824 A scarce complete volume of Loddiges' Botanical Cabinet, with 100 hand coloured plates engraved by George Cooke. Conrad Loddiges founded a plant nursery business in Hackney and the family became famous for exotic and rare plants. The mauve rhododendron that has become common in Great Britain today was imported by Conrad Loddiges. The Botanical Cabinet showcases the rare plants that they imported and grew. This volume is volume X, dated 1824. In contemporary half leather binding with marbled boards and endpapers. Top page edges gilt. The spine has gilt compartments and elaborate gilt tooling. There are title and volume labels. Internally there is a decorative title page and then a series of plates, each followed by a brief description on a separate page. Halle im Magdeburgischen: Renger Buchhandlung, 1723. Hardcover. Near Fine. [14], 624, [8] p., engraved frontispiece and xviii folded leaves of plates; 17 cm. Signatures: ):(7 A-Z8 Aa-Qq8 Rr4 (8vo). Contemporary vellum with gilt-tooled spine title over a brown background. All page edges dark red. Title page in red and black. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Stamp on title page verso indicating that this was withdrawn from the Stadt Bibliothek of Hamburg. Christian von Wolff (1679-1754) was a German philosopher who wrote extensively about all branches of science. In this volume his various scientific experiments are illustrated with 14 folded plates. Very scarce. In Near Fine Condition: vellum is lightly soiled; otherwise, clean and tight.

Edinburgh: Oliver and Bord, 1855. RARE in the 1855 First Edition, last seen at auction in 1969 (RBH). Original green embossed cloth with gilt floral arrangement front cover and gilt lettering back, large fold-out color map at rear. Very Good Minus, tears to cloth at head of spine, front hinge opened yet holding nicely, map at rear complete and present, but most of map separated from book, with a 2" chip separated but present. Sir John William Dawson, (1820-1899) ws an important Canadian professor of geology and principal of McGill University for 38 years. He was a Canadian pioneer in the field.of the microscopic studies of fossils, the first British North American trained to be an exploration geologist, and worked in Canada with Charles Lyell, the father of modern geology. .
