v, 118, [2] pp. Illustrated with 27 full-page hand-colored aquatint plates, and hand-colored title vignette. 27.5x19 cm (11x7½"), full red morocco with double gilt rule to covers and turn-ins, raised bands, spine lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. First Edition.

Illustrated record of the ways of life among the peasantry, elites, and religious figures in the Portuguese-controlled island of Madeira in the early 19th century. Aquatint engravings are unsigned. Each plate is accompanied by a text with information about the people and their occupation in the image. At the end of each text is a poem.
- The text is lighthearted in admiration of the comparatively simplistic way of life on the island, but does so, along with the illustrations, with a touch of caricature. Tooley 150.

Minor shelfwear, spine sunned, occasional light foxing, affecting some plates; near fine.
