Despite having a serious visual impairment, which sometimes prevented him from writing independently, Prescott became one of the most renowned historians of the 19th century. This set comprises: 'History of the Reign of Philip the Second, King of Spain', edited by John Foster Kirk. With a portrait frontispiece, six plates and a full-page map. The half title page is present. 'History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholic', edited by John Foster Kirk. With a portrait frontispiece, and four full-page plates. Lacking the half title page. 'History of the Conquest of Peru, with a Preliminary View of the Civilization of the Incas', edited by John Foster Kirk. With a portrait frontispiece, three plates and a full-page map. The half title page is present. Bound with: 'Biographical and Critical Miscellanies', with a publisher's advertisement. 'History of the Conquest of Mexico', edited by John Foster Kirk. With a portrait frontispiece, three plates and two folding maps. The half title page is present. Collated complete. 'The History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles the Fifth', by William Robertson, with an account of the emperor's life after his abdication by William Prescott. With a portrait frontispiece and one plate. The half title page is present, alongside a two-page advertisement. Collated complete. Uniformly bound in half calf. Externally, very smart with some shelf wear to the edges. Spines are faded. Very light marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age-toned but otherwise very bright and clean.
