About the author

Asa Briggs, created Lord Briggs of Lewes in 1976, is a former Vice-Chancellor of Sussex University, Provost of Worcester College, Oxford, and Chancellor of the Open University. He has written four volumes of a history of British broadcasting and is President of the Social History Society. In 2000 he was awarded the Wolfson Prize for History. His is married with four children.
