"Battle of Pecatonica, copied from the original, in possession of the compiler". Smith was a Llwyer and state attorney general and worked with the state historical society. William Rudolph Smith came to Wisconsin from Pennsylvania. Having served in the house of representatives in Pennsylvania, Smith became a delegate to the first Wisconsin constitutional convention in 1846. He wrote these volumes, comprising a complete history of Wisconsin from the era of French exploration through statehood, in the early 1850s. They include a large number of documents translated and printed from earlier French, English and American sources, with many manuscripts transcribed and annotated. Complete in 2 volumes. Thick 4to, 3/4 brown leather, marbled boards. 1056 pp. Willis moved from the east coast to Sacramento county in 1871, where he engaged in farming near Elk Grove, and teaching, until 1892. He then became a member of the editorial staff of the Record-Union, and continued the association for thirteen years. In 1879 he was tendered an appointment on the county board of education, of which he remained a member for twenty-three years. CONDITION: FAIR. A clean, tight copy internally. Covers well worn with substantial rubbing to edges, corners, and spine. Front board nearly detached. Owner's inked and penciled names on front pastedown and title page.
