Leipzig: Insel Verlag, 1909. Limited to 300 copies. Thin 4to, 25 x 16cm, [V], XXI, [2]pp. Illustrated double title and ornamented initials by Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukens. Wine-red calf, gilt title, t.e.g. Housed in beige paper slipcase with printed paper label. Near fine with rubbing to edges and spine faded. Acid offsetting in gutters of a few pages from ribbon bookmark, else clean internally. Slipcase shows some residue and soiling to back panel and wear to edges. Fifth book from the Ernst Ludwig Press, beautifully hand press printed on Japanese paper in black and gold and important for its first use of Cicero Kleukens Antiqua, designed by Kleukens specifically for this book.

One of the first significant private presses in Germany, the printing company for the Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig von Hessen, was founded in 1907 with typographer and printer Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukens as its director. The press modeled itself after the Doves Press in London and used only in-house typefaces, four of which were designed by Kleukens. This early volume from Ernst Ludwig is scarcely found in slipcase.
Rodenberg pg 74 (5).
