About This Item

Οι τοιχογραφίες της Μονής Βαλσαμονέρου - Απόψεις και φρονήματα της ύστερης Bυζαντινής ζωγραφικής στη βενετοκρατούμενη Κρήτη

[The Wall-Paintings of Valsamonerou Monastery - Aspects and Trends of the Late Byzantine Painting in the Venetian Crete]

Academy of Athens, 2020. In Greek with extended (44 pages) English summary. Cloth+dust jacket, 29 cm, 524 pp., rich illustration.; net weight 2680 gr. ISBN: 978-960-404-376-7. Read the table of contents and the first page of the English summary at the attached images.

Saint Phanourios Monastery is located in Crete, at the southern foothills of Psiloritis. The name "Valsamonero" is mentioned in a series of 16th century Venetian documents, as for example the Riant. 53 codex of the Harvard University where it is listed as "Chiesa della Madonna di Varsamonero". Abandoned today, the monastery was a prosperous monastic institution during the Venetian period. The murals, many with original themes, and the richness of the iconographic programme testify the high educational level of this monastic community and the devotion of its members to the Orthodox doctrine and the teachings of the hesychastic theology. It is clear from the narrations that the leaders of the monastery had an excellent theological education and training.

The book presents and discusses the excellent wall-paintings of the Catholicon, which are attributed to the early 15th-century painters Ionas Palamas, Angelo Acotanto, Alexios Apokafkos, and Constantinos Eirenicos.
