Flexible leather album, front cover stamped in gilt with title "Autographs" surrounded by gilt flourishes, spine decorated in gilt, all edges gilt. 98 pp, 19 of them blank, leaving 79 with manuscript and 78 signatures, 4 with writing in Japanese as well as English, 3 with full page calligraphic drawings of birds, with 38 photographs in the form of stamps including one oversize stamp measuring 1 3/4" x 2 1/4" of Mrs. C.C. Gaines, wife of the President of Eastman College ( the other stamps all measure 7/8" x 1"). The rest of the stamps are males, either students or faculty. The photographic stamps were done by C. H. Gallup of Poughkeepsie, NY. The album belonged to student Clif. J. Prosser. Very Good, the leather rubbed at edges, rear leather cover about half loosened from the board, light soiling. From the collection of Joseph Hyde Pratt, his ownership signature front end page. Pratt was a noted North Carolina geologist, conservationist, state and civic leader and WWI hero. . First Edition. Koster's classic work on the North of Brazil, first published in England in 1816, with a 2nd edition following in 1817. This 1st American Edition published and printed by Carey July 16, 1817. Original hand-made book, front cover reads "Day-Book B" in contemporary embossed calf, 13" x 8 1/2", containing 32 pp. with both sides covered with pasted-in poems clipped from newspapers of the time, approx. 6-8 per page. Most are likely from the Newburyport Daily Herald, as there is a partial page from that newspaper laid in. The final page verso with a long poem handwritten titled "The Birds of Passage" by Mrs Hemans ( Felicia Dorothea Hemans). The names Betsy and Johnson handwritten but separated on rear paste down. Good, calf chipped bottom 2" of spine, pages brittle with edge chips and tears, two pages with top right corner poems torn out, soiling and staining, the bookplate of noted Celtic and folklore scholar Edgar M. Snowden (1776-1845) wasn an apprentice to Mathew Carey, and after moving to Pittsburgh in 1811 became the owner of the Mercury newspaper. The period ownership signature at title page of David Goodwin. Possibly David Goodwin (c.1744-1825), who served as a militia officer during the Revolutionary War, later represented Charlestown in the Massachusetts legislature, and he was a founding member of the Massachusetts Bible Society.
