William Heinemann, 1915. 1915 First Edition. hardcover. xxx, 349pp, xiii, 338pp, colour and black and white illustrations, 3 folding maps (2 are reproduced), later plain blue cloth bindings with gilt titling to spines, spines faded, corners bumped, light foxing to endpapers, internally clean, Good in colour photocopies of the original dustwrappers.. Mawson turned down an invitation to join Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition in 1910. Mawson lead his own expedition to King George V Land and Adelie Land, the sector of the Antarctic continent immediately south of Australia, which at the time was almost entirely unexplored. The objectives were to carry out geographical exploration and scientific studies, including visiting the South Magnetic Pole. It includes an account of a harrowing journey back to camp in which one of his companions Ninnis was lost together with food and supplies in a crevasse. Mawson and Mertz continued but suffered food poisoning after eating some of the dogs. Mertz also died and Mawson managed to return to camp alone only to find their ship had left a few hours before. He and six of his men had to spend another winter in Antarctica.. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. William Heinemann, London 1915 (first edition). 25.0 x 17.0cms, c 690pp in toto, 123 vcolour & b/w illusts, 3 foldout maps in a pocket at the end of Volume 2, 2 very good hardback volumes with decorated boards (no dustwrapper as issued, both spines have faint type, the corner of vol 1 has some glue [?] residue) Douglas Mawson explains how his expedition explored the largely uncharted Antarctic coast due south of Australia. His sledging parties covered around 4,180 kilometres (2,600 mi) of unexplored territory, while his ship, SY Aurora, navigated 2,900 kilometres (1,800 miles) of unmapped coastline. His scientific activities included meteorological measurements, magnetic observations, an expansive oceanographic program, and the collection of many biological and geological samples, including the first meteorite found in Antarctica. The expedition was the first to establish and maintain wireless contact between Antarctica and Australia.
