About the author

Ofelia Zepeda is a poet, regents' professor of linguistics at the University of Arizona, and the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship for her work in American Indian language education. She is the current editor of Sun Tracks, which was launched in 1971 and is one of the first publishing programs to focus exclusively on the creative works of Native Americans.

Larry Evers, a professor in the Department of English at the University of Arizona, produced Words and Place (1979), a series of videotapes of American Indian singers, storytellers, and authors. With Felipe S. Molina, he has published such works as Yaqui Deer Songs / Maso Bwikam (SunTracks series, 1987), Woi' Bwikam / Coyote Songs (1990), and "Hiakim: The Yaqui Homeland" (Journal of the Southwest 34 [1992]" 1-138).
